Mute in an English-Only World
The fact that her mother wasn’t a well spoken in English speaker didn’t mean she had to stop living because that’s the vibe I got from this story. I understand it hard to come from another country and try to fit in with the American culture, but in some ways if you want to be over here and live American life you have to learn the American language. What I found surprising was even though her mom couldn’t speak English, how’d did she get a permit because doesn’t that require testing. To me is seems that she cared a lot for her mom and she want to see her to well and be happy, but it seems like she didn’t do a lot to help her mom out. When her mom was looking for the oxtail it seems like she didn’t want to tell the butcher what her mom was looking for. What was Saab was her mother dying this article was about not know English, it made the story interesting but in another instance it made the story more of a biography. In my words this story was ok but not my cup of tea.

Yeah I agree with you mostly. Her mom should have learned English before deciding to come here, but some people dont have those priveledges. Then again I guess she was trying to learn the language but just like any older person trying to learn a language it is a lot tougher than when your younger. And thats a good point you make how did she get a permit without being fluent in english language. Overall, I think you have a lot of good points in your blog.
The author is a he and not a she. And, if I’m not mistaken, the author mentioned that his mother did learn English from university classes in South Korea, but she never practiced actual conversations. He mentioned that she knew how to read english, but had difficulties with speaking it.
I also wanted to point out that Lee was still a young boy when the oxtail incident happened, so maybe he was scared and also embarrassed. But, when he grew older, I think he regreted for not standing up for his mother. When she died, I think that is when he realized that he was too late to apoligize.
